"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Multiple famous supporters have publicly petitioned for the position.

It's clear something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy nominees.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a close unit. Their music videos repeatedly depict them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus all is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics track departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent toughness demanded a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
