Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
