Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
